What are RSS Feeds?RSS is an acronym for Real Simple Syndication, and allows websites to publish a very clean, structured summary of their latest content. Because they are very straightforward to produce and consume, there are tons of tools and resources for it. Together with how useful the information can be, RSS have had a recent surge in popularity. A typical use for this technology is to avoid having to revisit multiple sites to see "what's new." An application can be used that will look for new content and tell you what you're interested in, to save time and effort. How can I use them? The easiest way to get started is to install an RSS reader and set it up for your favorite websites. Websites will typically display a little button like this one RSS with a link to the page with the feed. You can get images like this one here. I recommend getting an 'RSS Aggregator', that is, a program that will read many RSS feeds and present the updates to you, such as SharpReader. What are some good resources out there? There are many, many kinds of resources. An excellent place to learn more about RSS with the intent of producing it is Technology at Harvard Law, and the RSS Specifications site. Another super-useful tool is this RSS Validator website, that will take a URL of your RSS document and let you know if it has any problems. After you've got your RSS in validated and in working order, you can proudly exhibit an image like this one: ![]() |
